 2. Should you go to college? If so, what college?

 3. Should it be part time or full time?

 4. What about becoming an apprentice? Is this a good idea?

 5. Can I go to university and study hairdressing? If so, what courses are available are where?

 6. What about if I want to become a Salon manager what courses can I take?

 7. How can I fund my education? What options do I have available to me?

 8. How do I go about getting a job as a hairdresser?

 9. What do they look for from candidates?

 10. How can I build my CV to stand out other candidates?

Which is where I can help you…

My name is Rachael Johnson. I started hairdressing after I left school in 1986 with a YTS Scheme  apprenticeship at my local salon, where I built up a large clientele along the way, until one day in 1992 when one of my male colleagues (who was completely bald) suggested I worked freelance.

Up until then, I’d never considered it, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea, and decided (not without some fears) to hand in my notice. I then left to set up my own mobile hairdressing business which ran successfully for about ten years (thanks to the support and advice of my bald hairdressing friend), before I was asked to teach hairdressing at the local Further Education College, which is now my current job.

This is why I have put together this guide so that you to can learn from everything that I learnt over the last 22 years (including the mistakes so you do not make them) and start your own career as a hairdresser.

I am sure you remember this recent story.....

"Fed-up senior doctor quits £100,000 NHS job to become a Hairdresser"

Daily Mail - 04th September 2008

"A high-flying hospital consultant got so fed up with NHS red tape he has ditched his doctors coat for a pair of scissors and has become a hairdresser instead. Former clinical director in anaesthesia Roger Tackley has given up a £100,000 salary to realise his dream of opening up his own salon. The incredibly long hours and frustration of working within suffocating bureaucracy all added up disillusionment as a doctor."

Or this Story.....

"Why hairdressers are so fulfilled by their jobs"

 Daily Mail 05 August 2007

To find someone who is truly happy in their job, you need look no further than your nearest salon. Hairdressers, it has emerged, come second only to the chief executives of multinational corporations in the job satisfaction stakes.

Nicky Clarke said:

"Hairdressers are incredibly lucky as we have instant gratification in our jobs every hour on the hour. "A client comes in with an unruly thatch and at the end of the appointment they are smiling. "Hairdressing is a very sociable profession and clients share their life and intimate details with us - we become their confidantes - in a way that does not happen in other jobs".

“So..How Much Can I Earn As A Hairdresser?”

No two jobs are the same, but as a general rule, you could expect to receive between £15.00 - £20.00 for a very basic job, and £60.00 - £70.00 (or higher) for bigger jobs.

At the time of writing, a hairdresser can earn anything from £5,000 a year for part-time or evening work, to in excess of £35,000 a year. With add-on services and other expansion ideas, your earnings have no ceiling other than your own imagination and the amount of effort you are willing to put in.
